The 51st Grammy Awards were held on Sunday, February 8th, at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles. Among the awards that really concern us, Metallica was honoured with a Grammy for ‘Best Metal Performance’ for the track ‘My Apocalypse’ from their latest release, ‘Death Magnetic’. But really, who gives a fuck.
Classical heavy metal ‘icon’ Robert Plant took a lot of those awards home, because his lame collaborative album with Alison Krauss, ‘Raising Sand’, blew the Grammy jury off their feet.
Awards for Rock album and Song of the year went to Coldplay for ‘Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends’. Wonder how poor Joe Satriani feels about that. Rick Rubin won the Grammy for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical.
The nominees in the year’s Metal category were:

JUDAS PRIEST – “Nostradamus”
METALLICA – “My Apocalypse”
MINISTRY – “Under My Thumb”
SLIPKNOT – “Psychosocial”
Quite a surprise to know that Green Day wasn’t nominated in the same category. They would have probably won if they had figured here, by blowing the jury off their feet too. To go back in history, Metallica had been nominated for the very first ‘Best Metal Performance”Grammy in 1989, but lost out to Jethro Tull. Yes, JethroTull. The group has, however, won seven Grammys since, plus one more this 2009. Five of these awards have been for “Best Metal Performance.”
The Grammys are determined by 12,000 music industry professionals who belong to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. I think its time these people completely take away the metal category, instead of causing us such disgrace.
