Review: Rockavaria 2016

One of the greatest advantages of living in Germany is that there is always a good concert or festival close to you. Rockavaria in Munich is (reasonably) close to where I live, and after the success from last year, it was only obvious that I would return this year. The billing included Nightwish, Dust Bolt, Slayer, Anthrax, Sodom and more but I was there primarily for Iron Maiden and the Book of Souls world tour. The band flew into Munich on the Ed Force One and brought their ‘big’ stage act along, and the show was, well, magical. But more on that later. I got to the Olympiastadion early enough on Friday (Day 1) and was hit with my first dilemma – Powerwolf at the main stage or Dust Bolt on the lake? I had to choose Dust Bolt but managed to catch a few tracks of the Blessed & Possessed crew. I liked what I heard but Dust Bolt was on my radar ever since I watched them with Kryptos, Death Angel and Sepultura last summer. The German punk-influenced thrash metal band was an absolute treat to watch on the rather picturesque ‘Seebühne,’ a stage built on the small lake at the Olympia Park. The energy and urgency in the music was palatable and the quartet burst through their rather short set with barely any breathing room. The highlight was ‘Agent Thrash’ where frontman Lenny Breuss invited the audience on to the stage to celebrate thrash metal. I’ll be watching them again later this year in Austria and I’ll be on the lookout for their new album ‘Mass Confusion’ expected to hit stores later this year on Napalm Records. Dust Bolt at Rockavaria I caught a bit of Apocalyptica and Suicidal Tendancies but they’ve never really been among the bands I wanted to watch. There is also so much ‘heavy cello’ that I can handle. Before I knew it, my second dilemma of the day was upon me: Nightwish or Dog Eat Dog? I’d seen at Wacken a few years back and Dog Eat Dog the day earlier in Lindau (DE) and both bands were terrific. Had to come to a compromise again and catch the first half of Dog Eat Dog and the last half of Nightwish. DED is one of those bands that I’m surprised took me so long to get into! Their brand of saxophone heavy punk/rap rock got the crowds on their feet and in the air. Recovering from celebrating bassist Dave Neabore’s birthday the day earlier, the band pushed through the a classic playlist including ‘No Fronts,’ ‘Isms,’ and ‘Pull My Finger,’ at which point I set off to catch Nightwish. Hanging out right at the back, I was pleasantly surprised with the ferocity of the music live – a far cry from the symphonic, more sober music on the band’s records. I left the venue a few minutes before the band ended to catch the tube home, the fire from the big pyrotechnics still burnt into my eyes. Day 2 was really a confused day and a sort of rest day after the long day earlier and what I expected to be a long final day. While I really like Rockavaria, I think the organizers still need to come to terms with the fact that it is indeed a metal festival, not a rock festival. Sodom in the afternoon and Iggy Pop in the night?! I caught a bit of The Charm The Fury at the sea stage as I walked in the blazing heat to catch Sodom’s set atthe main stage. Tom Angelripper has to be one of the best thrash metal frontmen around and age evidently hasn’t caught up with the band. Beginning with ‘In War & Pieces,’ Sodom played a mix of old and new to satisfy the masses who seem to have turned up early simply to catch Sodom. And of course, its always good to hear ‘The Saw Is The Law’ played live. Angelripper The final day, Sunday was the big day. I got in early enough and caught Gojira play music off the new album ‘Magma’ which was entertaining but I was impatient. IRON MAIDEN WHERE ART THOU?! I sat through Tremonti’s set which was quite disappointing because its obvious that the ex-Creed & Alter Bridge guitar-slinger has the riffs but his vocals are so painfully weak that it completely took away the emphasis from the music. Anthrax came on for a 50 minute set and that’s when the weather started turning on its heels. Just as Joey Belladonna mentioned how lucky we were to have the sun shining on us for the festival, the large TV screens displayed an ominous message: thunderstorms expected. I stood around in my tshirt and shorts and evaluated the situation – take refuge in the covered stands miles away from the stage or brave the rains? I decided to brave the thunderstorms and raised my beer to Anthrax who were one of the best sounding bands of the day. The eleventh studio album ‘For All Kings’ is one of my favourite releases of the year and I was so happy to hear ‘Breathing Lightning’ live. Joey Belladonna has injected new life into the band and still sounds as good as he did 30 years back! Frank Anthrax Anthrax made way for Swedish occult legionaries Ghost who took advantage of the overcast conditions to cast a spell on the audience who were gathering in masses despite the weather getting stormier. Songs included ‘Year Zero,’ ‘Ritual’ and of course, the Satanic tribute to female orgasms, ‘Monsterous Clock.’ I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again – Papa Emeritus III is one of the most charismatic frontmen around. His voice, stage act and live banter all encompass what is a Ghost live show. By the time Slayer hit the stage, temperatures had dropped and I was soaked to the bone. A few shots of Jägermeister to keep me warm was all I needed to get into the pit, and a Slayer pit is truly a pit. I watched Slayer at Wacken a few years back and was terribly underwhelmed by the sound and stage act but the set at Rockavaria was something special. Loud, heavy, and did I mention loud? The American thrash metal legends ripped through a 60 minute classic set which included Hell Awaits, Raining Blood, Dead Skin Mask etc and ended with the Hannemann tribute song, Angel of Death. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen Youtube videos of Slayer played Angel of Death, and every time I see the backdrop change to the Hannemann/Heineken logo, I get a chill down my spine. Slayer at Rockavaria Through Slayer’s set, I steadily inched my way right to the front of the stage. The time for Iron Maiden was close but before that, I had to endure 75 minutes of Sabaton. It still surprises me that Sabaton got a better and longer slot than Slayer. They have their fans and their stage act is great but there is something about the music I can’t tolerate. This coming from a fan of the cheesiest power metal that exists (Gloryhammer anyone?). Still, I tolerated the set because every second in the pouring rain was a second closer to Iron Maiden. When Sabaton was done and Doctor Doctor started playing on the PAs, I think had tears in my eyes. I had endured about 2 hrs of rain in cold weather, I was tired and I just wanted to watch Iron Maiden. The two hours that followed was the perfect ending to what was a great, well organized festival; a celebration of heavy metal, really. The Iron Maiden stage setup looked like something out of the Mayan civilization – sticking to the theme of the Book of Souls album, with different backdrops for every song. The band played a bunch of songs from the new album as well as the classics (but really, is there an Iron Maiden song that isn’t a classic?) from almost every album but my personal highlights were Wasted Years, Children of the Damned and Blood Brothers, from Brave New World – the album that made me a metalhead 16 years back. Iron Maiden at Rockavaria There’s something very primal about heavy metal, and as the chords faded and the masses of metalheads filtered out of the Olympiastadion, I thought back about the show; almost 40,000 fans, drenched in the rain and still screaming together, experiencing the highs and lows of the music together. Its a feeling that is hard to put into words – just something that has to be experienced. Its been a long time since I watched a band and came out so… So weak with emotion, and yet so alive. Rockavaria 2016 was great and Headbangers India will be happy to be back in 2017 once again. See you around, München!

With 115 days to go for Wacken Open Air 2016, here’s what to expect at the 27th edition of the biggest metal festival in the world!
  1. Iron Maiden brings the Book of Souls tour to the hallowed Wacken festival grounds. Iron Maiden live is always a treat and Iron Maiden at Wacken is always something special!
  2. Lamb of God’s stage act is what legends are made of. We caught them live at Wacken in 2013 and if that was any indication, 2016 is going to be absolutely devastating!
  3. The Wacken Metal Battle brings bands from all over the world to compete for a shot at metal glory in the Bullhead City Circus! In the last 3 years, Canada has taken the crown twice with Crimson Shadows (2013) and Vesperia (2015), but will they win again this year? India’s representatives have included Eccentric Pendulum, Zygnema and Plague Throat. Who will represent us this year? So many questions!
  4. Be prepared to consume copious amounts of alcohol while listening to Mambo Kurt and other cheesy bands perform at the Beer Garden stage!
  5. No trip to Wacken is complete without a visit to the Full Metal Market – your one-stop shop to everything metal. From leather boots to metal band patches to Wacken tattoos to Viking drinking horns, the Full Metal Market has it all.

GODLESS, new death metal act from Hyderabad to release debut EP

From Hyderabad, India emerge Godless, a new death metal band formed by members of Skrypt, Shock Therapy, and Eccentric Pendulum. Promising a new sound, None other than Joe Haley of Psycroptic (Australia) fame has mixed and mastered their debut EP, in addition to doing a guest solo on this debut album. A statement from the band reads:
We are proud to announce that our debut EP Centuries of Decadence has been mixed and mastered and is ready to be unleashed. This is 18 minutes of fast-paced, skull-crushing, thrash-laced death metal with a shit ton of riffs. We’ve got a lot of exciting announcements coming up soon. Check our Facebook page to stay updated.
Track list for “Centuries of Decadence”: 1. Infest 2. Ossuary 3. Replicant 4. Oneiros Godless EP cover The album art is based on the second song of the EP, Ossuary. Ossuary talks about a wretched creature that dwells deep in the catacombs in a state of suspended animation, about to complete its last phase of hibernation to wreak havoc onto the world. The lyrics are a metaphor for nefarious covert organizations within the governments of today. Replicant, as the title suggests, was inspired by Blade Runner (1982). Oneiros speaks of the shaper of nightmares. This particular version has been inspired by Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.   Watch the teaser of the EP right here:

Metal Assault organizer releases statement about the show being stopped midway

Salman U. Syed, known as the man behind Bangalore Open Air, has released a statement on Facebook about what exactly went down on Sunday, the 6th of March, at Pebble in Bangalore, after his show ‘Metal Assault’ was stopped midway and then called off. Here is what he said about the entire situation:
Metal Show Stopped Midway – A lawyer’s business deal supposedly falls through because of LOUD MUSIC!
SALMAN U. SYED·
TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 2016
The 6th of March promised to be an eventful day, with some of the best metal bands in the country scheduled to perform at Metal Assault, which was to take place at a local venue called Pebbles. The show started on time at 3 p.m with Kerala based band Chaos playing a great set followed by their compatriots in The Down Troddence upping the ante soon after. However, trouble soon reared its head before Inner Sanctum had a chance to take the stage. A cop showed up at the venue demanding that the show be stopped at once due a complaint lodged by a lawyer who resided in the same neighborhood. Apparently, the lawyer, who was entertaining the Chief Justice as his guest, requested the police to shut down the event immediately, as he could not conduct his business with the Chief Justice due to the ‘loud noise’. To top it off, he threatened to use his influence with higher authorities if his request was not complied with.
I was then taken to the police station along with the manager of Pebbles, Mr Mathew, where we met the lawyer. We apologized and assured that the volume would be reduced, and subsequently requested him let the show go on since we had bands and fans who travelled from all over the country for the gig. The Inspector of the High Grounds Police Station filed a petty case against me, because according to him I was creating a ‘public nuisance’ and also warned me against turning the music back on. If I did not comply, he told me that I would be arrested unconditionally. While I was willing to risk arrest for the sake of the event, the management of Pebbles refused to allow me to continue citing their desire to ‘safe guard’ their venue.
This has raised many questions
1) Prior to conducting the event, I had consulted with Mr. Harris (the Pebbles owner) stating that the event would go on throughout the day, since the PA and sound system would have to be set up and tested during the morning before the show began. He was completely aware of this and did not have any issue whatsoever. If I had known ‘loud music’ would have been a problem for a place that usually plays much louder music on a regular basis, I would not have held the event at the venue.
2) Pebbles is a venue that is known to conduct events that range from DJ nights to EDM shows every weekend. Bizarrely, after the entire mess, they told me that since I didn’t use their own PA system, the volume of the event got out hand. The PA at Pebbles is insufficient to run a live rock or metal event and there have been events before where organisers have brought in their own PA systems, so why was it an issue now?
3) Pebbles is surrounded by marriage halls that frequently play music at ear shattering levels many times during the year. Why then was this event singled out for being ‘too loud’?
4) Pebbles has a license to hold live music events on their premises. This was not the first time a live event has taken place there, so, once again, why was my event singled out?
I don’t really want to get sucked into a blame game here, but if Mr.Harris from Pebbles really cared about organisers running events at his venue, he would have offered to help with the situation at hand. While he was in Goa, the Pebbles manager Mr. Mathew and I were running from pillar to post trying to get the gig up and running. Mr. Harris, however, could not be reached, since he never bothered answering his phone, despite numerous calls from our end.
Mr. Harris, I would like to openly state that due to your negligence towards your own venue, I was shamed into apologizing and pleading before the police for no fault of my own. I have also suffered tremendous monetary loss due to the shutting down of the event.
To everyone who attended, I am truly grateful and I cannot thank you enough for your patience and support. Having said that, I would like to further explain the situation we are facing. As most of you know, we run events on the revenue model of ticket sales. All money that comes from these ticket sales goes towards hiring the venue, hiring sound and lights, booking flights and hotels for the artists and much more. Due to this we are unfortunately unable to provide refunds at this point. We are, however, aware that 170 people purchased their tickets through Book My Show, while a further 50 purchased tickets at the venue.
To make up for what has happened, we have a similar event planned, wherein everyone who has purchased a ticket for Metal Assault will be given free entry. To the 50 people who purchased their tickets at the venue, we kindly request you to send in your names at sal.echoes@gmail.com so that we can keep a record for the next event.
I would like to once again offer my sincere apologies to everyone who attended the show, especially to all the amazing people who travelled long distances to attend the gig. I thank you immensely for your support and patience through all of this, and I hope this will not deter you from attending more metal events in the future. I would also like thank the wonderful crew who area always the backbone of the festival, Special Thanks to Sufiyan Ken No, Shiva, MadDas, Saurabh, Chintan Chinnappa Nikhil V. Pai Govind Joshi! You guys are always awesome!
